Agent Advice Ensures Unforgettable Success
I was in a band called SuperStar booked by EastCoast. As we were just getting started, Raleigh agent Barry Herndon took over an hour out of his day one afternoon to coach me in ways for our band to improve. It was everything from set-list improvements to equipment needs to general musical tips. It was a very in-depth discussion. Now, this may not seem like a big deal to most people but I'm going somewhere with this... read on...At the time Barry Herndon sat me down and coached me as a young inspiring musician, I thought this was just the way it worked in the business. Or maybe I thought Barry was just a nice guy (which he is, by the way). Or maybe he just had a little free time that day. But none of this was necessarily the reason for his attention to my band. Ultimately, he did it to create a positive experience for his clients. He knew that if my band SuperStar could become a great band, it would translate into a great experience for the client.
I have since gone on to form a record label called Deep South. Looking back on this experience, I now realize this is not the way most agents work. I realize now that the reason East Coast has been a great company for 30 years is because they truly care about their clients. They do what not many agencies do; They spend time coaching their artists. They spend time to find out what exactly are the needs of the client. And that have an ability above all the rest to match the right artist with the right client. They genuinely care about the needs of their clients. And because of this, good times turn into great experiences; both for the clients and for the artists. The realize that by taking time to ensure A+ artists, they ensure A+ experiences for their clients.
Thirty years is just the beginning. I hope I'm around to see the 60 year anniversary, because there WILL be one. Business practices like the ones East Coast adhere to ensure longevity in a very fickle business.
