For more than 30 years The Maxx has been spreading the spirit and energy of its music all over the world. Since it's founding in the early 1980's at Atlanta's Therrell High School and Northside School For The Performing Arts the band has performed at more than three thousand events, for more than one million people on four continents. Today, founding members Rod Whittaker (bass/keyboards/vocals), Leroy "Roc" Lovelace (sax/vocals), Steven Rollins (guitar/vocals) and former active member now manager Tony Cooper are joined by more recent arrivals, Rainy Middleton (vocals), Darnell Springer (trumpet/keyboards/vocals) and Jimmy Calhoun (drummer) on a mission to carry they're innovative and authentic live performances to an even wider audience.
The band spent its first two years playing nightclubs, high school dances, college parties, amusement parks and concerts in and around Atlanta but quickly expanded their horizons up the East Coast and into Canada while it's members where still in high school. They made weekend trips to surrounding states, toured more extensively during the summer and appeared in concert with Kool & The Gang, The Commodores, Chubby Checker, Archie Bell & The Drells, Cheap Trick and James Brown. This early experience set the foundation for excellence that has been the band's calling card throughout its career.
In 1983 after most of the members had finished high school and were now in college at Georgia State University, the band started to narrow it's focus to the college market. For the next seven years they played at hundreds of colleges and college clubs in the Southeast, Midwest, South Central and Northeastern United States and were nominated for Campus Entertainer of the year four years in a row by the National Association for Campus Activities. During this time the band purchased a small studio and started writing, recording and performing their own music. As their original music became more and more popular with their live audience, record companies also began to take note. The band was courted by some of the biggest companies in the industry, but as the R&B side of the music industry went away from bands and more towards rap acts and solo artists the group decided to go in another direction and in 1990 another important chapter in the band's life began.
That year the band returned from a summer tour of Japan with a new direction. After spending the first ten years of their career playing almost exclusively to college audiences the band was ready for a new challenge and in the Winter of 1991 they began a journey that has take them to a new and ever expanding audience.

Wow! The Maxx were as good as it gets. Everyone, including the staff at the Poinsett Club, thoroughly enjoyed the music. Rain (sp?) was outstanding, but then so was the entire band. Jane Perry (Grace's sister) and I really appreciate your taking care of us. The entire process was easy. Thanks much for your help. Will definitely point anyone looking for a band your way.

There are no words to adequately express how incredible they were! I could use ever single adjective and it wouldn't come close to describing what an amazing job they did and how obsessed every single guest was with them. They completely made the night and the entire wedding! They were the highlight of it all! They truly rocked the house down! I always said I wanted a band that could entertain the younger crowd all the while getting my grandparents (who are quite conservative) up and dancing - The Maxx certainly accomplished this! My grandfather kept saying, "this band is spectacular... where did you find them?!" I didn't know they could or would dance, but let me assure you, they were having a BLAST! From the first song the band played until the night ended no one set down nor did they want to! They were so flexible with the timing and adjusting of schedules and played the entire time w/o taking a break. No one wanted them to stop or the night to end. My only song request was "Proud Mary" and they did Tina Turner proud. Their energy and excitement was contagious! We wanted to have them play again the following night and then every night after. Every single member of the band was so warm, fun, nice & accommodating. They were worth every dime and if I'm ever lucky enough to have another event that would warrant music, The Maxx would be my first choice! I would recommend them to anyone and everyone!
Please let them know how much we truly loved them as individuals and how truly talented they are as a band. It was better than any concert I've ever been to. Again, if you had enough time I could go on for hours about our wonderful experience, but as I said, finding the perfect words for them is impossible. Needless to say, people are still coming up to me saying - BEST BAND EVER!
It was such a wonderful experience working with you and them and I thank y'all from the bottom on my heart!
Have a great evening and all of my best & thanks!

Thanks for your follow up! The Maxx did a WONDERFUL job at our reception, and we truly could not have been happier with their performance. They started off the party with a bang and kept up the momentum until the very end. I, for one, have never danced that much without taking a break, and I think I can say the same for all of our guests! I actually had quite a few people come up to me and ask me about them, how we found them, and said they were the best band they had ever seen at a wedding. I'm sure my parents had the same experience... we are finishing up with our honeymoon on Sunday and I'll ask them when we get home... Anyway, they were a blast and are so talented, and we also really liked how they engaged the crowd -- especially the Soul Train line, so much fun!! I would be happy to provide you with some photos/video from the dance floor if it would be helpful for your website, or give you supportive quotes, referrals, etc. The Maxx truly made all the difference on what was the most fun night of our lives. Thanks a million to you and the band for everything!
They were wonderful, thank you! Our members really enjoyed them, I heard a lot of compliments, great songs and very energetic.. our general manager loved them, they kept the crowd going all night.

The Maxx was unbelievable!! All of our friends can't stop talking about them. We danced the entire night and couldn't have picked a better group. We loved them and would be a reference if you ever need one. They made the night!!!
Mother of the Bride
We could not have been more pleased with The Maxx. I had never heard The Maxx and picked them based on a friends advice and a little internet research. As you would expect, I had very high expectation for their performance. Although their price was higher than I would have liked to have spent, The Maxx exceeded my expectations and they were simple fantastic. Their performance could not have been any better and they were worth every penny! I have already received several comments about how terrific the band was. My other two daughters have already requested that we use The Maxx for their weddings. Ted, I am very grateful for all of your help and assistance. You were excellent as well. You can gladly provide my contact information to anyone you think I can help with either you or The Maxx.
I am one happy customer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Steve - The Maxx was absolutely incredible. They provided an amazing performance that received rave reviews. People are still talking about them and our party! We could not have been more pleased with their professionalism.
The Maxx performance was absolutely everything we could have wished for our party and party guests!
We would be thrilled to hire them next year. We are choosing next year's party date this coming Thursday, and then I would love to email and see if they are available! I know everyone would be excited to see and hear them again!

Hi Tony - Truth is... The Maxx was the best band I have seen or heard in my 23 years at Linville Ridge. They were on time, very personable, great stage presence, great musicians, great female vocalist and our members totally enjoyed their performance. They went with our schedule and were a great big part of a very successful party. Thank you so much!
We will definitely hire again!

Guests were from California, London, Argentina, New England and the raves will spread to those points and farther. The Maxx set up, rehearsed, completed sound checks and were wide open from the start. After the Maxx finished, we put on our bagpipe act, although not ready for the road, it was lots of fun!

The Maxx on Friday might were ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! Everyone at the wedding were crazy bout them! The lead singer gave a great show out on the pool covering and it was just a magical night! We could not have asked for a better band! We had 80% New Yorkers and lots of guests from Rhode Island and they all wanted to know the name of the band!

Hi Mr. Cooper - The Maxx was incredible! They played the perfect mix of oldies and more modern music and their energy set the tone for a wonderful prom. I've had several people come up to me today and tell me what great time they had and asked who the band was. Their choreography and horn section were a big hit. We loved every minute! Please pass this thank you and praise onto the band. They truly were magnificent! Sincerely,

Tony - The MAXX did a phenomenal job!! They kept the dance floor packed the whole night!! Our President said it was the best Faculty Dinner Dance of his tenure. The performers were extremely nice and accommodating to work with too! Please forward my sincere thanks! All the best,

My apologies for not emailing you after we spoke the other day. The MAXX was incredible! We were so happy with the whole night from beginning to end. They were a blast and truly professionals at what they do. Everyone at the party had a blast and are STILL raving about the band, and I'm constantly being asked who we used. It didn't hurt that we had a great crowd to help them along, but I'll never forget cutting the cake at 9:15pm and looking into the back of the tent and people were dancing as if it was 11pm haha! What a great night and I hope they enjoyed themselves as well!
New Orlens Bride
The band was incredible.I agree. The guys--and girl--were real cool about everything, and they put on a great show. Thanks again for all your help. By the way, I have already been asked when we are going to get The Maxx back. I don't know what the band thought about the show, but we'd love to get them again fall term next year
Washington & Lee University
The Maxx was absolutely, hands down the best party band I've ever seen at any event, ever! Within 10 minutes of starting their set, our dance floor was overflowing and ladies were kicking off their shoes. At one point, there were over 100 people crowding the floor with their hands in the air during "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz. Oh, and this was before dinner was served. And did I mention this was a charity auction? These events are not exactly known for wild dance floors...we've never seen anything like this in all our years of putting on this event. I heard all night that this was the best Spirit Ball ever...all in thanks to The Maxx! THANK YOU!
P.S. And I'm still looking for the groom, but I've definitely already found my wedding band!!!

The band was stupendous. We couldn't have asked for more. The dance floor was filled the entire three hours plus that the band played. There were no lulls except for the intermission - and even during that time period the floor was filled with salsa dancers. Nina's father (who is from Venezuela) had brought his Ipod filled with salsa music which the band agreed to put on his its sound system during the break so the music continued to flow even then. The band interacted with the guests on a number of occasions doing sets that involved active audience participation by guests on the dance floor. Richard and Nina danced a time or two on stage. At least two other guests went on stage and sung along on microphone. Nina sang on stage as well; I'm not sure she ever left the dance floor!. It was all very collaborative which made it all the more fun. The band sang at least one encore which was much appreciated. The only bad thing all night was that, as always, the party had to end. I think Richard and Nina's young friends could have kept going another hour or two.
Tony was very easy to work with and very responsive to all our questions. I would not hesitate to recommend this band for any event...
I'd also be happy to talk to anyone who is considering hiring The Maxx and wants to know more about them.

The band was absolutely perfect. I've had many people approach me to say how much they enjoyed the band, and a few who asked where we found them and how they could book them for their own events (I've of course been directing people your way). They really know how to put on a great show. The turnout for the Ball exceeded our expectations, we sold out the event with 700 tickets (first time selling out, and twice as many people as last year), and the event as a whole made around $10k. If you have any other questions for me, just ask.

Hi Ted! The Maxx were everything we expected them to be!! Everyone LOVED them and they really involved the very enthusiastic crowd! Couldn't have been more pleased! Everyone wanted to know who the band was! Met a bride here at sea island today who has booked them for nov wedding in our same venue! Will recommend them to anyone! Use me as a reference.

Hi Steve.......... There are absolutely NO words to describe the job The Maxx did at Ellie and Alex's reception on Saturday night. They were positively unbelievable!!! There was one point during the reception when EVERYONE was on the dance floor!! Please, please, please pass the kudos on to whoever needs to get them! They were fabulous!! And if you, or The Maxx need me to write anything confirming all of this, or pass on a recommendation, I am MORE than happy to do so!!
Thanks for all of your help!!

Hi Tony, We JUST finished our Homes for the Holidays event at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaufort, SC, and I want to go ahead and book The Maxx for next year's event.
EVERYONE loved the band and I had people all night long asking me to reserve them for next year.
Take care. Mary C. (November 21st, 2013)
