The sound of the vibes and the bass together is compelling. The instrumentation lends itself to simple melodies, with strong rhythmic grooves that are entrancing and provocative. This duo performs an eclectic mix of contemporary instrumental music, as well as modern arrangements of American classics. Through collaboration, Byron Hedgepeth and Mike Holstein create music that compliments the sound of vibes and bass, while showcasing improvisation.
Byron is a performer and composer in the Asheville area and southeast region of the United States. Writing music has played an important role in his musical path, expressing vividly the hopes and aspirations of life's journey. This is especially true of the composition "Going Away," which was inspired by the life and passing of his grandfather. The duo collaboration, Byron Hedgepeth and Mike Holstein, features original compositions and improvisation - utilizing vibraphone, acoustic bass, drum set, marimba, and percussion. This compelling ensemble recently performed at the 2009 Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC.
Since 2004, Mike has been a member of the band Cotangent, a New York based group led by pianist/composer Bill Gerhardt. He has played on two recordings with this band, "Stained Glass" and "Thrive". He also appears on Tony Moreno's "Trio Music" (Art of Life Records). He has performed with Joe Locke, Ingrid Jensen, Randy Brecker, Frank Kimbrough, Kendra Shank, Ron Horton, Marc Mommaas and Tim Horner among others. A truly gifted musician, Mike is finding himself more in demand than ever as he performs in jazz clubs in New York, throughout the Carolinas and continues to be a force with the Jazz Composers Forum.
