JIM DERRICKSON began guitar study at the age of 15 and learned very quickly; within a year he formed his own band as lead guitarist. By the age of 19 Jim began playing professionally, something he would continue for the next 25 years. At the age of 21, he picked up a nylon string guitar for the first time and studied with local finger-picking legend Roy Ralston; within 6 months he was admitted with scholarship to the Carnegie Mellon School of Music to study classical guitar. Jim went on to pursue guitar professionally full-time and eventually acquired a masters degree from the University of Southern California.

Throughout his career, Jim has shared the stage with such music industry heavyweights as Sarah McLachlan Huey Lewis and the News, The Indigo Girls, Bo Diddley, Neil Sedaka, and the Romantics. In 1998 his band Jabber (the name was later changed to Jabberpony) was chosen to perform on Sarah McLachan's Lilith Fair tour. During this time Jim continued his progress as a classical guitarist, and studied with Francis Perry, a Segovia masterclass student; Elizabeth Busch, a former student of Scott Tennant and Pepe Romero, and a Christopher Parkening masterclass student; and Randy Reed, Duke University guitar instructor. Some of his more memorable moments along the way: attending an Andres Segovia concert when the master was at the age of 94 and nearing the end of his career; spending an evening having a couple of beers with Bruce Springsteen at a local Jersey nightclub; and being invited onstage with Sarah McLachlan for her encore in front of 16,000 fans.
